Stihl’s battery cut-off saws are the TSA 230, a 9-inch (230 mm) saw for cuts up to about 2.75 inches deep, and the larger TSA 300, a 12-inch (300 mm) saw that cuts close to 4 inches deep; both run on Stihl’s 36-volt AP batteries. The TSA 230 suits pavers, tile, rebar and indoor work where exhaust is a problem, while the TSA 300 is the one to consider if you want to replace a gas cut-off saw for curbs, block and thicker slabs.
TSA 230 vs TSA 300 at a Glance
| Spec | Stihl TSA 230 | Stihl TSA 300 | Gas 14-inch saw (for reference) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wheel diameter | 9 in (230 mm) | 12 in (300 mm) | 14 in (350 mm) |
| Max cutting depth | ~2.75 in (70 mm) | ~3.9 in (100 mm) | ~5 in (125 mm) |
| Power source | One AP battery | AP battery (high-output packs recommended) | 2-stroke engine, mixed fuel |
| Approx. weight with battery | ~11-12 lb | mid-to-high teens lb | ~22-26 lb |
| Wet cutting | Water attachment available | Water attachment available | Water kit standard or optional |
| Typical 2026 price, tool only | ~$500-$750 | ~$1,000-$1,500 | ~$1,200-$1,800 |
Depths and weights vary slightly with wheel type and battery choice. Prices are dealer market ranges and exclude batteries and chargers, which add several hundred dollars if you are new to the AP system.
What Battery Cut-Off Saws Do Well
- Indoor and enclosed cutting. No exhaust, so cutting tile, pavers or rebar in basements, garages and stairwells is far more practical than with gas.
- Instant start. No pulling, no choke, no stale fuel after a slow month.
- Lower noise and vibration than gas, which matters on residential sites and over long days.
- Single-handed weight class. The TSA 230 is light enough for overhead or awkward cuts on rebar and threaded rod where a full-size saw would be tiring.
Where They Fall Short
- Depth. Even the TSA 300 cannot match a 14-inch gas saw’s roughly 5-inch depth, so through-cutting thick curbs often needs a cut from both sides.
- Runtime under sustained load. Long plunge cuts in reinforced concrete drain packs fast; plan on multiple batteries for production work.
- Battery cost. If you do not already own AP packs, the system entry cost narrows the price gap with gas.
Runtime: How Many Cuts per Battery?
Cut count depends on material hardness, depth and wheel condition. The figures below are realistic working ranges for a sharp diamond wheel and a high-capacity AP pack, not manufacturer claims.
| Material and cut | TSA 230, per AP 300 S | TSA 300, per AP 500 S |
|---|---|---|
| Concrete paver, 2.4 in thick, 8 in long | ~25-40 cuts | ~30-45 cuts |
| Porcelain tile, 12 in cut | ~40-70 cuts | Overkill; use TSA 230 |
| #4 rebar (1/2 in) | ~80-150 cuts | ~100-170 cuts |
| Concrete block, single face cut | ~10-20 cuts | ~15-25 cuts |
| Curb stone, full-depth pass | Not practical | A handful per pack |
For a full day of paver work, a common setup is three packs in rotation: one in the saw, one cooling, one on the charger.
Choosing Between Them: Decision Matrix
| Your work | Better choice | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Paver patios, walkways, tile, rebar | TSA 230 | Depth is enough, lighter, cheaper |
| Plumbers and electricians cutting pipe, strut and rod | TSA 230 | Compact and quick to grab |
| Hardscape crews cutting block and wall caps | TSA 300 | Extra depth avoids flipping the piece |
| Curb and slab cutting daily | Keep a gas or high-voltage saw | Depth and sustained load favor larger saws |
| Interior demolition, no ventilation | Either, sized to depth | Zero exhaust |
Silica Dust and Safe Setup
Cutting concrete, block, brick, stone and many tiles releases respirable crystalline silica. In the US, OSHA’s silica standard for construction (Table 1) calls for handheld power saws on these materials to use integrated water delivery. Respiratory protection requirements then depend on location and duration: outdoors with water for four hours or less per shift typically requires none, while longer outdoor use or any indoor or enclosed cutting requires a respirator with an assigned protection factor of at least 10, such as a properly fitted N95-class half mask. Use Stihl’s water attachment and keep the flow steady enough to form a slurry, not a mist.
PPE checklist
- Safety glasses or goggles plus a face shield for abrasive wheels.
- Hearing protection; battery saws are quieter than gas but still loud at the wheel.
- Cut-resistant gloves and leather boots with steel or composite toes.
- Respirator as described above, fit-checked before each use.
Technique basics
- Support the workpiece so the kerf opens as you cut; a closing kerf pinches the wheel and can cause kickback.
- Start the wheel at full speed before contact, then let the wheel’s weight do the work.
- Cut in passes of roughly 1-2 inches deep on thick material rather than forcing full depth.
- Avoid cutting with the upper front quadrant of the wheel, the main kickback zone.
- Never cut sideways or grind with the face of the wheel.
Wheels and Wear Parts
Use wheels rated for the saw’s arbor and maximum speed. Diamond wheels for concrete and pavers typically cost $50-$200 and last far longer than abrasive wheels; abrasive wheels for steel are cheap but shrink quickly, which reduces depth as they wear. Inspect the arbor flange, wheel bolt and guard for damage at every wheel change, clean slurry off the guard and water fittings after each wet session, and keep battery contacts dry.
Bottom Line
The Stihl TSA 230 is a strong fit for anyone already on the AP battery platform who cuts pavers, tile, pipe or rebar, especially indoors. The TSA 300 extends that into block and thicker hardscape work, but daily full-depth curb and slab cutting still favors a larger saw. Budget for water delivery, a respirator and enough batteries to keep one charging while you cut.
