The Greenworks Pro 80V 21-inch mower is one of the stronger battery walk-behinds for suburban lawns up to roughly a third to half an acre: it has a brushless motor, a full 21-inch cut, 3-in-1 mulch/bag/side-discharge capability, and enough battery energy that most owners finish a typical yard on one pack. Where it falls short is very large, wet or overgrown properties, where you will need a second battery or a different class of machine.

This review focuses on the 21-inch models in the 80V line, explains what the 80V label really means for runtime, and maps the push and self-propelled versions to the yards they suit best.

What you get with the 21-inch Pro 80V mower

Greenworks sells several 21-inch mowers on its 80V battery platform, mainly in push and self-propelled form, usually bundled with a single battery and a rapid charger. Exact kit contents change between retailers and model years, but the core design is consistent.

Feature Typical spec on 21″ Pro 80V models Why it matters
Cutting width 21 in Same pass width as most gas push mowers, so mowing time does not grow
Motor Brushless Better efficiency under load, no brushes to wear out
Battery voltage 80V max (about 72V nominal) Higher voltage helps keep blade speed up in thick grass
Bundled battery Usually 4Ah or 5Ah About 290 to 360 watt-hours of stored energy
Cutting modes Mulch, rear bag, side discharge Covers routine mowing and leaf season
Height adjustment Single lever, roughly 1.5 to 4 in range Quick seasonal changes without adjusting each wheel
Weight (with battery) Roughly 60 to 85 lb depending on version Self-propelled versions are heavier but you do not push the weight
Price range About $400 to $750 with battery and charger Self-propelled and two-battery kits sit at the upper end

Runtime: the battery math that decides everything

Manufacturer runtime claims for this class are usually quoted as “up to” figures measured in easy grass. In practice, runtime depends on how many watt-hours the battery holds and how hard the motor works.

Watt-hours, not volts, set your mowing time

Multiply nominal voltage by amp-hours to get usable energy. A 4Ah pack on a 72V nominal platform holds about 288Wh; a 5Ah pack holds about 360Wh. A brushless 21-inch mower typically draws somewhere between 400 and 900 watts depending on grass height, moisture and whether the self-propel drive is engaged.

Battery Energy Easy conditions (dry, weekly cut) Hard conditions (thick, damp, bagging) Approx. lawn per charge
2.5Ah ~180Wh 20 to 30 min 12 to 18 min Up to 1/5 acre
4Ah ~290Wh 35 to 50 min 20 to 30 min 1/4 to 1/3 acre
5Ah ~360Wh 45 to 60 min 25 to 35 min 1/3 to 1/2 acre
Two 4Ah or 5Ah packs 580 to 720Wh 70 to 110 min 40 to 65 min 1/2 to 3/4 acre

A useful rule: a reasonably fit person mows about a quarter acre in 30 to 45 minutes with a 21-inch deck. If your 4Ah pack lasts 35 minutes in your grass, you have just enough for a quarter acre, with little margin for a late-spring flush.

Charging time

Greenworks rapid chargers refill a 4Ah or 5Ah 80V battery in roughly 45 to 75 minutes. That makes a mid-mow recharge practical for medium yards: mow the front, charge during lunch, finish the back. If you prefer to finish in one session, a second battery is the simpler fix.

Push or self-propelled: which 21-inch version to choose

The self-propelled version adds a drive motor that pulls the mower forward at an adjustable pace. It costs more and draws extra energy, usually cutting runtime by 10 to 25 percent compared with pushing.

Your yard Better choice Battery suggestion
Flat, under 1/4 acre Push Single 4Ah
Flat, 1/4 to 1/2 acre Push or self-propelled 5Ah, or two 4Ah
Slopes or rough ground Self-propelled 5Ah plus a spare
Over 1/2 acre Self-propelled, or step up to a wider deck or rider Two batteries minimum
Already own Greenworks 80V tools Bare tool or tool-only kit Reuse existing packs

Greenworks also sells larger-deck models on the same platform, including a 25-inch self-propelled mower. For yards past half an acre, the wider pass reduces total mowing time noticeably, though the machine is heavier and less nimble around beds.

Cut quality and bagging

The 21-inch deck delivers an even cut at normal mowing heights, and mulching works well when you follow the one-third rule: never remove more than a third of the blade length in one pass. Battery mowers can bog when asked to mulch tall, wet grass, and the controller often slows the blade to protect the battery. If the lawn has grown long, raise the deck one or two notches for the first pass, then lower it for a second.

Bagging performance is decent for leaves and dry clippings. Wet clippings pack into the bag and choke airflow faster on any mower; empty the bag before it is completely full to keep suction strong.

Ownership realities: what wears and what to maintain

  • Blade: The biggest factor in cut quality and runtime. A dull blade tears grass and makes the motor work harder. Sharpen once or twice a season and replace when nicked or worn thin; replacement blades are inexpensive.
  • Battery storage: Store packs indoors at partial charge (around 40 to 60 percent) over winter. Avoid leaving them in a hot shed in summer or a freezing garage in winter; heat is what shortens lithium-ion life most.
  • Deck cleaning: Brush or scrape dried clippings from the underside after use. Do not hose the motor area or battery bay directly.
  • Wheels and drive: On self-propelled models, the drive gears and wheel treads are the usual wear parts after several seasons. Keep the wheel area clear of packed grass.
  • Battery replacement cost: A replacement 80V 4Ah or 5Ah battery typically costs $180 to $300, so treat the battery as the most valuable part of the purchase.

How it compares with other battery mower platforms

The 21-inch Pro 80V mower competes with 21-inch models on platforms such as EGO 56V, Ryobi 40V HP and Toro 60V Flex-Force. All are capable; the practical differences come down to battery cost, how many packs fit the mower, deck material and which other yard tools you want on the same battery.

Platform Nominal voltage class Common bundled pack Typical 21″ kit price range
Greenworks Pro 80V 80V max 4Ah to 5Ah $400 to $750
EGO Power+ 56V 56V 5Ah to 7.5Ah $450 to $850
Ryobi 40V HP 40V 6Ah to 7.5Ah $350 to $700
Toro 60V Flex-Force 60V 5Ah to 7.5Ah $450 to $850

Voltage alone does not make one platform better; compare watt-hours and the cost of a spare pack. The Greenworks advantage is a broad 80V tool range, from string trimmers and blowers to chainsaws and snow throwers, which makes a second battery more useful year-round.

Who should buy it, and who should not

Good fit

  • Lawns from about 1/8 to 1/2 acre that are mowed weekly
  • Owners who want quiet, low-maintenance mowing without oil, gas or spark plugs
  • Anyone already using Greenworks 80V tools or planning to build out the platform

Poor fit

  • Properties over 3/4 acre where a rider or zero-turn saves hours
  • Lawns regularly left two or three weeks between cuts
  • Steep, wet slopes, where any walk-behind requires extra care and a self-propelled drive with good traction

Bottom line

The Greenworks Pro 80V 21-inch mower is a sensible gas replacement for small-to-medium lawns, provided you size the battery to the yard. Choose a 5Ah pack or a second battery if your lawn approaches half an acre or you plan to bag often, pick the self-propelled version for slopes, and keep the blade sharp; that last habit does more for runtime and cut quality than any spec on the box.
