A Bosch cordless lawn mower at 36V gives you a wider cutting deck and noticeably more runtime than Bosch’s single-battery 18V models, which makes it the better fit for lawns from roughly 300 to 600 square meters (about 3,000–6,500 sq ft), while the 18V versions suit small urban plots. The catch for US buyers is that Bosch’s green garden-tool range is sold mainly in the UK, Europe and Australia, so availability, warranty and battery support in the US are limited.

How Bosch Gets to 36V

Bosch’s DIY garden tools have used two approaches to 36V. Older and some current models such as the EasyRotak 36-550 run on a dedicated 36V lithium-ion pack. Newer mowers in the line are built around the 18V POWER FOR ALL battery system and reach 36V by taking two 18V batteries at once, which is what the “2x18V” in their model names refers to. The practical difference matters for ownership:

Approach Batteries needed Shared with other tools? Main advantage Main drawback
Dedicated 36V pack One 36V battery Only other Bosch 36V garden tools Single battery to charge Smaller ecosystem, pricier spares
2x18V (POWER FOR ALL) Two 18V batteries Yes, across Bosch 18V DIY and garden tools, plus partner brands in the alliance Reuse drill and trimmer batteries Need two charged packs every time
Single 18V One 18V battery Yes Light and compact Narrow deck, short runtime

If you already own Bosch green 18V tools, a 2x18V mower is usually the better value because you can buy it with fewer batteries or as a bare tool. If you are starting from scratch, a kit with two batteries and a charger is the simpler buy.

Cutting Width, Box Size and Lawn Fit

Bosch names many mowers with the deck width in centimeters, for example Rotak 32, 34, 37, 40 and 43 in older ranges. Wider decks take fewer passes but weigh more and need more battery. The table below uses general class figures rather than the exact numbers for any single model, so check the rating plate of the mower you are considering.

Class Cutting width Typical voltage Typical grass box Suggested lawn size
Compact 32–34 cm (12.6–13.4 in) 18V 30–40 L Up to about 200–300 m²
Mid 37 cm (14.6 in) 36V or 2x18V 40–45 L About 300–500 m²
Large 40–46 cm (15.7–18 in) 36V or 2x18V 50–55 L About 500–800 m² with spare batteries

For comparison, a typical US walk-behind cordless mower from brands like EGO or Greenworks has a 19–21 inch deck. Even the largest Bosch cordless mowers are narrower, which reflects their focus on smaller European gardens.

Runtime: A Worked Estimate

The most reliable way to compare batteries is watt-hours: volts multiplied by amp-hours. Two 18V 4.0Ah batteries give 36V x 4.0Ah, or 144 Wh. A single 18V 2.5Ah pack gives 45 Wh.

Setup Energy Rough area per charge (dry, regular cutting)
18V 2.5Ah, one battery 45 Wh About 100–200 m²
36V 2.0Ah dedicated pack 72 Wh About 200–300 m²
2x18V 4.0Ah 144 Wh About 400–600 m²
2x18V 6.0Ah 216 Wh About 600–900 m²

These are planning estimates, not manufacturer ratings. Long or wet grass, slopes and low cutting heights can cut coverage by a third or more. A reasonable rule is to buy enough battery for about 1.5 times your lawn area so you are not stopping halfway through.

Features That Matter on Bosch Mowers

Grass combs for edges

Many Rotak models have grass combs on the sides of the deck that lift grass near walls and borders into the blade path. This reduces the amount of edge trimming afterward, which matters on small lawns where edges are a large share of the work.

Rear roller or wheels

Most Bosch cordless mowers use four wheels. If you want a striped finish, look specifically for a model listed with a rear roller; these are less common in the cordless range, and the extra weight reduces runtime slightly. Four-wheel mowers handle bumpy lawns better and turn more easily.

Folding handles and storage

Bosch mid-size mowers typically fold flat and can be stored upright on the grass box. That is useful in small sheds, where a cordless mower can take up less than a third of the floor space of a petrol mower.

Mulching and cutting heights

Check the number of height positions and the range. Most mowers in this class adjust from about 20–25 mm up to 70 mm. Mulching inserts are offered on some models but not all.

36V vs 18V: Which Bosch Should You Choose?

Your situation Better choice Why
Lawn under 200 m², flat 18V compact Light, cheaper, one battery is enough
Lawn 300–500 m² 36V or 2x18V, 37 cm class Fewer passes and enough energy for one session
Lawn over 500 m² or slopes 2x18V, largest deck, high-capacity packs Most energy per session; or consider a 21 in US-style mower
Already own Bosch 18V green tools 2x18V bare tool or small kit Reuse batteries and charger
Living in the US Think carefully Spare batteries, blades and warranty service are easier to get with brands sold locally

Similar 36V Alternatives

Other brands use the same two-battery idea. Einhell’s Power X-Change line, for example, has 36V mowers that run on two 18V packs, and Makita’s 18V X2 (36V) LXT mowers work the same way in their own systems. In the US, single-pack 40V, 56V and 80V mowers are far more common and generally have wider decks.

Ownership Realities

  • Blades: plastic decks and steel blades are standard. Sharpen or replace the blade each season; a dull blade drains the battery faster.
  • Batteries: store at roughly half charge in a cool, dry place over winter. Lithium-ion packs lose capacity faster when stored full in a hot shed.
  • Grass box: the mesh clogs with damp clippings, which reduces collection. Rinse and let it dry fully.
  • Pricing: in markets where Bosch sells them, 36V kits usually cost noticeably more than 18V kits, with batteries making up a large share of the price. Bare-tool 2x18V versions are often the cheapest way in for existing owners.

Pick 36V when your lawn is larger than a small courtyard plot, choose the 2x18V route if you already own Bosch green batteries, and size the battery pack to your lawn rather than to the deck width alone.
