Four criteria, in the order they should actually influence the decision — not the order the box advertises them.
- Repeatability beats peak power. Anything that cuts to a line gets judged on its fence, base and detents first. Motor size is the last thing to check.
- Platform beats spec sheets. Four batteries and two chargers in, the brand decision is made for years. Pick the platform whose bare-tool range covers what you will need in three years, then buy bare tools instead of kits.
- Weight and balance beat feature counts. A tool you carry up stairs forty times a day gets judged by your shoulders, and no spec sheet tells you where the mass sits.
- Consumables are part of the price. Blades, pads, abrasives and bits cost real money over a season. A cheap tool with odd or proprietary consumables is not cheap.

Miter saw

Table saw

Keep the riving knife on and buy the stand built for the saw. Skip it if your stock is nearly all sheet goods, because a track saw handles that better.
Reciprocating saw
Demolition, remodels, cutting things you should not have to cut. Orbital action, tool-free blade changes and a pivoting shoe all matter, but vibration is what you notice by mid-afternoon. Buy a wide blade assortment before you need it, nail-embedded wood blades included.
Oscillating multi-tool

Router

Variable speed, soft start and fine depth adjustment do more for cut quality than horsepower, and a plunge base turns a one-job tool into a three-job tool. Check the collet: a poor one will not hold a bit true, and you feel that in every profile.
Random orbital sander with dust extraction
Finish quality lives here. A pad brake stops swirl marks on contact, variable speed keeps you off the wrong speed for the material, and a real extraction port keeps the abrasive cutting instead of loading up. Sanding without extraction wastes more paper than the vacuum costs.
Doweling and domino joinery tools
