Craftsman V20 is a sensible starting point for occasional repairs, assembly, yard work, and light remodeling. The important question is not whether one drill is good. It is whether the batteries, chargers, tools, and replacement parts will still fit your work two or five years from now. Compare the entire platform before buying the first kit.
Start with the work you actually do
Make a list of the cordless tools you are likely to buy. A homeowner who needs a drill, impact driver, light, and small saw has different priorities from someone building a deck or maintaining a large yard. Write down the jobs, materials, and frequency rather than choosing by the number of tools in a bundle.
For furniture, shelves, and general repairs, a drill/driver and impact driver cover most fastening. For cutting lumber, a circular saw needs more battery capacity than a drill. For pruning or mowing, the outdoor tools may determine the platform. A cheap starter kit becomes expensive when you replace it because the brand has no suitable saw, blower, trimmer, or larger battery.
Also separate “occasionally useful” from “regularly used.” If you will use a reciprocating saw twice a year, a corded version may be cheaper and more reliable. Cordless makes more sense where setup time, access, or outdoor work matters.
Understand what Craftsman V20 batteries offer
V20 is Craftsman’s 20-volt cordless platform. The battery name describes nominal voltage; it does not tell you how long a tool will run. Capacity is normally expressed in amp-hours (Ah). A 2.0Ah pack is lighter and often adequate for drilling and driving. A 4.0Ah or larger pack generally runs longer, but adds weight and costs more.
Runtime varies sharply with the tool and material. Driving short screws might consume little energy, while a circular saw cutting framing lumber can drain a small pack quickly. Expect a compact battery to be useful for short tasks, not an entire day of sawing. Battery temperature, dull blades, overloaded tools, and old cells reduce runtime further.
V20 tools and batteries are not automatically compatible with every Craftsman cordless product. Check the exact battery interface and voltage before buying, especially with outdoor equipment or clearance items. Do not force a battery onto a tool, use homemade adapters, or mix chargers from another brand. The charger controls charging behavior and is part of the safety system.
Compare the platforms, not just the kit price
| Platform | Best fit | Typical advantage | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Craftsman V20 | Light homeowner work and occasional projects | Often attractive kit pricing; straightforward tool range | Verify current availability, battery sizes, and outdoor-tool depth |
| Ryobi ONE+ | Homeowners wanting many tool categories | Broad ecosystem, including unusual household and garden tools | Tool quality and performance vary by product line |
| DeWalt 20V MAX | Frequent remodeling and heavier use | Large selection and strong professional-oriented support | Higher purchase cost; premium batteries add substantially to price |
| Milwaukee M18 | Heavy-duty trade work and specialized tools | Strong high-performance and trade-specific selection | Usually excessive cost and capability for occasional household repairs |
These categories are broad, not guarantees for every tool. A platform can have an excellent drill and a mediocre trimmer. Read reviews for the individual tool, then check battery pricing and warranty terms.
Calculate battery and charger costs
Compare a complete working setup: tool, two batteries, charger, and any required accessories. One battery is inconvenient when the first pack is charging. Two batteries let you work while the other charges, although a rapid charger may reduce the interruption.
Do not compare only amp-hours. A larger pack usually supplies more runtime, but a 2.0Ah battery can make a drill or impact driver easier to control overhead. For saws, blowers, and high-load tools, prioritize a larger pack and check whether the tool has electronic overload protection.
Replacement batteries are a long-term cost. If a platform battery fails after several years, the replacement may cost more than the original promotional kit. Store lithium-ion packs indoors, away from extreme heat and moisture. Leave them partially charged for long-term storage rather than keeping them permanently on a hot charger.
When you need a basic drill and driver set, compare Craftsman V20 drill and driver kits with complete kits from competing platforms. Count the included batteries and their Ah ratings. A kit with two small batteries may be a better buy than one with a single large battery if you are doing short jobs, but not if you plan to cut a lot of lumber.
Check tool performance and ergonomics
Brushless motors generally offer better efficiency, cooler operation, and longer expected service than basic brushed motors, but they are not automatically worth the premium for every homeowner. A brushed drill used for ten minutes a month may last many years. A brushless circular saw or impact driver makes more sense under repeated load.
Handle shape, trigger control, balance, and weight matter more than advertised speed for many jobs. A heavy drill becomes tiring when installing cabinets. An impact driver can strip small screws if you use too much power. Selectable speed, a clutch, a work light, and a belt hook are practical features; a higher top speed is not always useful.
For cutting tools, budget for blades. A dull blade causes slow cuts, heat, crooked results, and increased battery drain. Use the correct blade for wood, metal, or masonry, and stop when a tool repeatedly trips its overload protection. Continuing to force it can overheat the motor, battery, or electronics.
Check service, parts, and availability
Before committing, search for the individual battery, charger, replacement blade, and common accessories—not just the starter kit. A platform is less useful if a failed charger is difficult to replace. Check the warranty registration process, repair options, and whether local retailers stock batteries.
If you want the widest selection of homeowner tools, compare Ryobi ONE+ cordless kits. If you expect frequent framing, decking, or renovation work, examine DeWalt 20V MAX kits. The extra cost is easier to justify when you will use several heavy-duty tools, not when the drill will install a few screws each month.
Make the choice based on replacement behavior
Choose Craftsman V20 when the current kit price is good, the tools match your list, and you expect light-to-moderate use. Choose a broader homeowner ecosystem when future tool variety matters more than the lowest entry price. Choose a professional-oriented platform only when its durability, performance, service, or specialized tools will actually save time.
Finally, buy one representative tool before filling the garage. Use its battery, charger, controls, and warranty process on a real project. That small test can expose uncomfortable grips, inadequate runtime, or poor local availability before every tool you own depends on the same battery.
